The weather has been slow to warm up here and the garden has not exploded yet as it did this time last year. But for my houseplants, it’s not so much the temperature that matters: it’s the light.
A couple of plants that were struggling over the winter are now producing leaves left and right. This time of year gives me the chance to admire again the sheer variety of how houseplants’ leaves grow, as I wrote last year:
I’d love for you to take a moment to admire your houseplants are doing: where are you seeing new growth? Where can you marvel about the way leaves are growing and unfurling? Which plants have made it back from the brink?
Earlier this week I took a moment to admire the ZZ-plant (Zamioculcas zamiifolia) that lives in our kitchen. The way in which this plant’s leaves grow is nothing short of magical to me: it produces a long stalk of tightly wound leaves, which then unfurl all together. And the glossy green of the leaves is just sumptuous (also, it’s a really easy plant that doesn’t mind a bit of shade).
I’ve not yet started propagating this year (I’m still very much preoccupied with the garden), but you can read about last year’s propagation here, and soon I’ll be sharing how I repot plants.
I’d love to hear about your houseplants’ new growth and will be back in your inbox soon! Do share and join the conversation 🌱
What I’ve been up to
Earlier this month I wrote about my visit to the Berlin Botanic Gardens and visiting their glasshouses.
Over at Female Owned, I asked what it would mean to root into trust in your business (which led to some great comments), shared my business and financial goals and asked what people are excited about currently in their business.
I currently have a recovering peace lily who finally has some new healthy leaves after a long period of bad health!
For reasons I can’t fully fathom, the monstera deliciosa that sits in my office has just gone bonkers in the last months, including sending up the largest new leaf yet. If it continues at this rate, I’m going to have to think about removing other plants from the room.
